Samhain with Goddess Hecate

Samhain or All Hallow’s Eve has always been an enchanting time for me.  Before I knew exactly what this day was, I always had a sense of reverence for it.  As I learned and was introduce to Goddesses, I see clearly why Hecate is the Goddess of this time.  This year Samhain falls two days before the New Moon, increasing Hecate’s energy.  Hecate is consider a Dark Goddess, but please do not get dark and evil/negative confused.  Dark Moons represent her, but isnt all the Moon dark? seeing as it has no light of its own…  Hecate is a reminder for us, that we must first pierce through the dark night to reach daylight.  We must be comfortable with our “shadow” part of our selves in order to become balanced. She is the ruler of the Heavens, Earth and Underworld.  In Neo Paganism she is consider a Triple Goddess, Maiden, Mother and Crone.  In her maiden aspect she can be called upon for new beginnings,  in her Mother aspect she can be called upon for nurturing and protection and in her Crone aspect she can be called upon for magic, wisdom and protection.  For me, I feel she is very much like the High Priestess in the Tarot, she is the keeper of the mysteries.  Hecate doesn’t seek inner knowledge, she has found it and imparts it to others.

Most of us have only seen pictures of her as a Crone, old and warty, an outcast.  How wrong they are.  Hecate is a protector of women and a liberator, setting women free from the bonds and trappings of men.  She enforces feminine freedom from masculine influences. For SHE is the Goddess that taught Witch Medea the secrets to magick and SHE is the one who empowered Medea to Draw Down the Moon.  Revealing to us that if we are empowered by Hecate, we need no one else to draw down the moon into us.   She is love and anger, our deepest desires and emotions.

Hecate is a Goddess I am very fond of, especially this time of the year.  One of her symbols is a torch, as she is the Keeper of the Crossroads.  As we near Samhain, the veil thin, she illuminates the unconscious, revealing great mysteries to us.  This is the time of going into the underworld (fall then winter) as we make our way to the light.   As I sit on my back porch at night, I hear her messenger, the Owl, singing her great mysteries to me.  I burn the exotic, sultry smelling Opium oil on my altar for her.  She is the Queen of ALL living things.  She teaches us to look at our true self, showing us the responsibility of our own actions.  I will say to be warned here, her lessons are not sweet and cuddly, her actions are swift and to the point.  I will leave you with an invocation to Hecate 🙂

I call upon She who unveils the mystery,

Ancient Crone, Hecate, who reigns

as darkness falls upon the unlit sky

Queen of Heaven, Earth and the Underworld.

Hecate, this is your time, Eternal Goddess, Lady of the Night.

I have prepared this sacred Circle for you, O Wise One,

Come now into me, your Priestess,

Fill me with your presence

O gracious Queen of Witches

As I do perform this Rite in your honor.

Many Blessings, Namaste

Stacy Hill
